Mood Board.

Synopsis.

My animation is going to be about a gang of fish. A whale called Donald, a piranha called Percy and an unnamed Clam. The 3 of them are hanging out and they get really hungry. An ice cream van drives past so they chase after it. When they catch up to Donald orders ice cream, but is challenged by Percy to order more, so he does, Percy then swims off after smelling something funny. Percy swims into a drug den and is convinced by the Evil fish called Mad Dawg to buy some see weed. The see weed makes Percy faint. Donald eats his ice cream and gets severe brain freeze and faints. The gang wake up in hospital to be greeted by Puff daddy the puffer fish who gives them a lesson on life and how to stay away from evil temptations.

Statement of intentions.

I am going to create a short animation for my moving image AS. I will create the animation on macromedia flash. The animation is about a man who lives on his own and collects coins. His favourite coin goes missing and he the animation is mainly going to be hi chasing after it. A bit like a baby bell advert.

I am going to take influnce from a few different cartoonists and cartoon shows:
INFLUENCES.
- dog judo
- family guy
-south park
I am taking influence from south park because it doesn't use the best or most intricate animation but it still makes up for it with style of movement and interaction which is unrealistic. I am taking influence from family guy and dig judo because i find the humour in those cartoons very funny. I am going to take the way they make random stuff that makes no sense seem ligitemate and funny.

Casablanca- background to the film

Casablanca is the 1942 movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The film has achieved worldwide popularity since then, having also won three Oscars and been nominated in five additional categories.

Humphrey DeForest Bogart (December 251899 – January 141957) was an Americanactor and cultural icon. In 1997, Entertainment Weekly magazine named him the number one movie legend of all time. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked "Bogie" the greatest male star.

After trying various jobs, Bogart began acting in 1921 and became a regular in Broadwayproductions in the 1920s and 1930s. When the stock market crash of 1929 reduced the demand for plays, Bogart also turned to film. His first great success was as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest. He had been acclaimed for his performance in the play, and his friend Leslie Howard saw to it that he reprised his role in the 1936 film version. Despite rave reviews, Bogart was typecast as a gangster in B-movies. His breakthrough came in 1941, with High Sierra (though he still played a criminal) and The Maltese Falcon. The next year, his performance in Casablanca finally raised him to the peak of his profession and at the same time, cemented his trademark film persona, that of the hard-boiled cynic who ultimately shows his noble side.

Bergman, named after Princess Ingrid of Sweden, was born in Stockholm, Sweden on August 29, 1915 to a Swedish father, Justus Samuel Bergman, and a German mother, Friedel Adler Bergman.[2] When she was three years old, her mother died. Her father passed away when she was thirteen. She was then sent to live with an aunt, who died of heart complications only six months later. Afterwards she was raised by another aunt and uncle, who had five children.

Bergman joined Humphrey Bogart in the 1942 classic film Casablanca, which remains her best-known role. Bergman did not consider Casablanca to be one of her favorite performances. "I made so many films which were more important, but the only one people ever want to talk about is that one with Bogart." About Bogart, she said "I never really knew him. I kissed him, but I didn't know him

The film was based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's then-unproduced play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The Warner Bros. story analyst who read the play, Stephen Karnot, called it (approvingly) "sophisticated hokum", and story editor Irene Diamond convinced producer Hal Wallis to buy the rights for $20,000, the most anyone in Hollywood had ever paid for an unproduced play. The project was renamed Casablanca, apparently in imitation of the 1938 hit Algiers. Shooting began on May 25, 1942 and was completed on August 3. The film cost a total of $1,039,000 ($75,000 over budget), not exceptionally high, but above average for the time

Classic Hollywood Cinema.

3 examples of classic hollywood cinema dating from 1920-1950:
. King Kong (1933)  (video of colorized version)

. Some Like It Hot (1959)

. Top Hat (1935)

Classic Hollywood cinema is mainly considered formalist as it uses continuity editing, where it makes it seem like you are there watching whats happening. It doesn't use any cuts and uses little editing.

German Expressionism

1) What are the key features of German Expressionism?
The genre comes from Germany. It first kicked of in the 1920's. German Expressionism uses dramatic lighting, distorted sets, symbolic action and characterisation. All of these features give the films a unique feel and make them quite scary and mysterious. The actors generally wear makss or heavy make up and move in slow jerky ways.

2) Where can the influence of German Expressionism be seen in film history?

To what extent can Run Lola Run be considered a formalist film?

Run Lola Run can be considered a formalist film as it uses cartoon section and slow motion many times. It also repeats itself 3 times, a little like groundhog day.

The director also uses allot of bright stand out colours like shocking red and bright yellow t draw attention to certain objects, for example the watch hand is red and so is the ambulance.

The director uses techno trance music to give the movie a slightly hazy feel.

Class Formalist Film

As a whole class we have we been studying the differences between formalism and realism in film. We talked about the differences between the types of filming and defined the key features of both. We were then given the task of making a formalist film as a whole class.

For this task we were split into groups, like sound, camera work etc etc. I choose to be n the camera work group with WIlliam. Together we decided what kind of shot types we would use and what angles we would like to use. For example we chose shot types like worms-eye views, birds-eye views and canted shots as we believed these added to the formalism of the film.

When it came to filming I was the one working the camera as we found out that we only needed one person to do that job.

Having watched the rough cut i think that we chose the camera angles and shot types very well but i need to work on keeping a camera still when its free hand and panning/zooming in or out smoothly. I can achieve this by using certain equipment or techniques.
